INTRODUCTION TO BEST PRACTICES
The Coalition for Responsible Tobacco Retailing
Providing education and training to help retailers prevent underage
tobacco sales. One of the Coalition’s main functions is to understand
and communicate retailers’ best practices regarding tobacco sales,
allowing retailers to benefit from the experiences of others and
improve compliance performance.
The Coalition has collected information about retailer experiences
by working with thousands of retailers nationwide since 1995. It has trained over 200,000 retail owners, managers and employees either online or in one of more than 1,900 classroom training sessions. It has also worked with many local agencies
to provide retail education and training.
The Coalition has compiled what has been learned from these
experiences into the We Card Guide to Best Practices which serves as a
comprehensive guide to preventing underage tobacco sales.
The Best Practices discussed in this guide cover the following subject areas
STATE LAW and/or STORE POLICY
TRAINING
IN-STORE MATERIALS
SUPERVISION/COMPLIANCE
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Please consider the Best Practices discussed in this guide as you
design the learning environment for your employees. By implementing
these practices and processes in your company, you will be establishing
successful strategies followed by retailers nationwide to prevent
underage tobacco sales and improve compliance performance.
Please feel free to contact the We Card program at 888-872-4603 to discuss the Best Practices in further detail.
