10 Steps to Compliance

04/2021

We Card’s mission is to provide tools and training to help retailers prevent the underage sale of age restricted products.  For 26 years, We Card has offered a range of ala carte tools and a complete turn-key suite of products along with broad educational efforts to help retailers not only understand minimum age sales laws and requirements but comply with them.

At We Card, you can find everything you need to get from zero to sixty quickly.  If your store only needs a few training tools, We Card has that too.

Here’s a brief run-down of how to get started.  And if you’re very familiar with We Card or have much of these steps covered by your own internal programs, you may find one or two that are helpful to boost your efforts.

Step 1

Familiarize yourself with your local, state and federal laws.  What are the requirements?  What do you need to do to make sure you comply?  Visit We Card’s Resource Center (a free login area) to access We Card’s State Law Library and view FDA requirements as well.  And check to see if your state requires a sign be posted in your store in our State Sign Requirements section.

Step 2

Sign up for We Card’s eNews and follow us on social media, Twitter and Facebook. Sign up for FDA updates as well – all available on our homepage wecard.org.

Step 3

Assemble a training program starting with your company policy.  You can find a sample policy template here.  And consider ordering a We Card Renewal Kit that has a complete set of tools like an employee guide, window and door decals, and more.

Step 5

Take We Card’s Best Practices Survey to determine what you will need and download the PDF offered at the end that details in a simple and easy-to-use guide.  (including links to resources)

Step 6

Start a training program, either your own or use We Card’s award-winning eLearning program. Order only what you need for you and your store employees.

Step 7

Measure your store’s performance using ID Check Up and reward employees for asking for IDs.

Step 8

Consider point-of-sale tools that can make the job of evaluating IDs better:  The We Card Calendar is a good first-step but We Card also offers the We Card Age Checker App and a direct link to order driver’s license bar code scanners for your POS system.

Step 9

Keep an eye on FDA compliance data to see where checks are happening and to find out if your store has been checked.  FDA does not report back to you if your store passes a compliance check.

Step 10

And to take things a step further, learn more about We Card’s Retailer Pledge program and aim to prevent adult-for-underage purchases.
