How Do Employees Rate We Card training?

Employee Confidence in their ability to do their job rates highly

Confidence Matters.

That’s what retail employees tell us after they’ve completed their We Card online training.

We asked employees to tell us about their We Card training experience in their own words.

Trainees’ feedback helps us identify areas that might need improvement and lets us know what works in our training modules.  Employees consistently rate We Card highly in areas that help them perform well on the job and prevent underage sales of age-restricted products.

Here are highlights of those who completed We Card’s Employee Training Course, and separately, those who completed We Card’s Manager Training Course.

Employee Training Course – 71% had never taken We Card training before. This may speak to the high turnover rate in retail operations.  85% identified their title as “sales associate”.

Manager Training Course – 65% have completed We Card training in the past. We recommend they complete the Employee Training Course first before going onto the more in-depth manager’s course.  90% indicated their job title as “store manager.”

We are big proponents of “trained and confident” employees because having confidence in your skills can translate to better performance. Confidence is established by “learning by doing” which is why We Card training has role playing interactive simulations within in the course.

Employee Training Course – 81% said they were “more confident” and 19% “confident” in their job requirement to identify and deny minors’ attempts to buy age-restricted products.  N=1,000+

Manager Training Course – 92% said they were “more confident” and 8% “confident”.

N=200+

Now exactly what did retail employees rate highly within the training courses?  Since each course is unique, they rate differently. What employees rate highly speaks to their needs as well.

Employees were asked to rate the course on six key areas.   Overall, retail employees rated We Card training very highly: 90% rated the program Good or Great.

Two areas rated the highest:  Checking IDs Practice and What to say to customers.

We weren’t surprised as many years ago, employees asked for practice, practice, practice, but they also told us that they want to avoid confrontations with customers. Learning “What to Say” helps avoid confrontation and employees continue to appreciate We Card training and its focus on the right ways to respond to customers.

Meanwhile, store managers who took the Manager Training Course rated their training experience even higher -- in the mid-90% range for Good or Great.

Managers also rated two areas the highest, Age Calculation Practice, and Access to state laws and FDA requirement summaries.

Finally, we receive a lot of feedback from trainees in their own words to our question of “What did you like MOST?”

Employees told us what they liked MOST:

You kept it interesting and not boring where I had to try and stay awake. You kept it moving the whole time.

A new way to respond to customers. A.E.R.O

(AERO is a technique taught in the training.)

The exercises/practices throughout the training ensure I’m 100% ready to be a cashier/customer service and very confident in refusing sales of age restricted products to any minors, no matter what they try to convince me to sell to them anyway.

Managers voiced these as the MOST liked parts of the course:

The legal information provided for review, and information on how to deny sales to adults buying for minors.

How you train us about every ID and [the] AERO [method].

The overall training course is excellent for anyone that has never worked in a convenience store.

We do hear constructive feedback and most comments relate to length of course or employer requirements that they take the course.  (We’ve worked to shorten the course but there’s only so much we can do and achieve our goal of a trained and confident employee.)

We also learned that employees care about upholding the laws governing age-restricted product sales and appreciate tools, advice and training to help them complete the important tasks of their job. Further, some research studies point out a connection between a well-trained employee and employee retention – the better trained an employee is, the longer they’ll stay on the job.

If you haven’t already, consider We Card’s training for your team. A trained and confident employee can go a long way to improving compliance and avoiding stiff fines and penalties for underage sales.  Get Trained Here.
